I guess, in a similar vein, it would be good to see an option to copy a sequence diagram. This is most useful when creating a number of scenario variations that have similar sequence of events but different parameters/conditions.

Could the Favorites folder in the Resource View be enhanced to create shortcuts to packages in the Project Explorer. i.e you could click a favorite package and it would do the equivilent of Locate in Browser.

When using the Corporate Edition if the user tries to do something that they don't have rights for, nothing happens. It would be better if a message was displayed to indicate this. i.e. if they can't update a diagram currently it lets them drag an element onto a diagram but when releasing the mouse nothing happens.

Could the Corporate edition be enhanced to allow packages from one model to be linked into another? Our programme here is made up out of a number of models (one for each product) but we have a requirements/system test model that needs to sit as an umbrella across all product models and allow linkage into elements in the product models.

What I would envisage is the option in the Explorer view to link (rather than create) a package which would allow the user to browse to the required package in the destination model.

Suggestions and Requests / Addin/Plugin Support

I have developed a number of utility applications that automate the process of some aspects of our model creation & documentation via the automation interface.

It would be really good if EA supported some generic interfaces for pluging these applications into the EA environment e.g. ActiveX components. The kind of integration initially required would be for a plugin to extend the menu/toolbar and the pop-up context menu for the explorer view. Going on from that maybe an event interface to inform the plugin of significant activities occuring in EA.

The biggest gain for me would be the ability to hook to Explorer view context menu as most of my applications have the same code in them to locate a model, open it, and create an explorer view of their own to arrive at the relevent package or element before the real processing can begin.

I am creating a Custom Code Generation template for MIDL. How do I specify the file extension for the generated files? Currently they are always *.h.

When will multiple classes in one generated file (Package) be supported?

I wonder if there is an EA extensibility requirement developing here? For some time I have been modelling requirements by creating External Requirement elements (through the EA GUI not directly). The Requirement Details are a cut & paste from the Business Requirements document (Word). I then create a bookmark in the Word document based on the number I have used to prefix the Requirement Short Description. Finally I had a file:// URL to the Files section of the Requirement to point to the bookmark.

Thanks to your latest HTML generator I can now publish the Requirements Model with hyperlinks straight into the Business Requirements document.

You can see where this is leading to.... What would be really good is an automation method to create the Requirement. In Word I can create code to create the bookmark and then create the EA requirement. Now that would be great... and a lot quicker than the the current process (I am managing >500 requirements currently ). I have avoided any form of direct database update for the reasons/questions that Deborah has indicated and an auotmation interface would hide the detail of the underlying rules and thus be more future-proof.

Are there any plans for a full read-write interface in the near future?

this is great news . This is exactly the scenario that I tried to convey some two years ago.

We run with some 20+ models with shared packages across them. The change management process has been quite labour intensive to date. This will be an absolute blessing.

in the Project Explorer right-click the Sequence Diagram and select Copy Diagram To Clipboard.

In the Project Explorer right-click Right click a Package and select Paste Diagram

This works in EA 3.51.616

Good point. I forgot to add that post processing of the XMI export can be quite effective.

I choose to use the automation interface when updating EA as I am isolated from the underlying structure of the database, referential integrity and schema change. It is good that there are so many options to choose from

I have been using automation for a number of project activities:

A web browser interface to EA ( via IIS/ASP)
A Word Plugin to create Requirements in EA automatically from the document text.
A Utility to repeat repetitive tasks in EA.

I have used VB6, ASP & VB.Net to achieve this.

If you want a free Automation client then use VBScript which is free to download from MSDN ( I think IE installs it but there is a later version on MSDN). OK you don't get an IDE. You can use the Microsoft Script Debugger to run & debug the scripts (again this is a free download). You can also use VBA in the Microsoft Office Products (Tools->Macro-Visual Basic).

in principle this should work. I have done similar. To check that EA is correctly registered with COM try the same line in a VB Script file (e.g. test.vbs) and runit fromthe command line.

If this works then it is likely to be IIS environmental. i.e. Does the user the page is executing under have the appropriate rights, etc.

I have actually moved all my ASP code over to ASP.Net and wraped EA up in its own object, especially now that there is a type library for the object model.
