Import log from XMI useless
« on: April 29, 2008, 02:45:24 am »
When I import a package from XMI the generated log file is very chatty. It contains lots of uninteresting stuff. What makes it annoying it the message Error: Unknown Generalization Source or Target
which gives as much help as the weather forecast for the next year. Would I expect too much to get a hint to what existing part I can peek? Further it ends up with Import Complete! Does that tell me the error message could be ignored???

It's most likely the error is caused by a reference to a package outside of the tree you exported.

That said, the error message is certainly worthless. Since EA most likely knows what's gone wrong when it encounters an external reference, why not explain why. There are straightforward ways to annotate things in XMI.

Of course it is possible that EA is not aware of the cause of the problem. IMO this is an even larger issue, which is likely to come back and cause greater problems down the line. XMI handling in EA has improved dramatically - much thanks to hard work and great collaboration between Sparx, Paolo, Darren et al - but still has some fragile parts. Anything that hints at a weak 'back end' to the XMI engine makes me very nervous.
No, you can't have it!
