Toolbox diagram. "Save as profile" not showing
« on: July 18, 2013, 08:53:55 pm »
Hello,

I'm trying to create a toolbox ; I have a «profile» package and a class diagram under it.

Profile creation works fine, right clicking on the package, and "save package as UML profile".
I understood that in order to create a toolbox, and not a profile, one should right click on the diagram, not the package, and click "save as profile".

Problem is, in the diagram's context menu the "save as profile" command is not showing.

I've read this thread by Lars

Hi all,

in my EA 9.3 Ultimate I am creating a profile package to add it to an MDG technology. unfortunately the menu entry "Save package as UML profile" doesn't show up (which was the case in 8.0 before...

But I can't find any "View > Workspace and commands" dialog. I have View > Workspace Layouts... but nothing refering to commands there.

Must the diagram have any specific tag/stereotype/name that make this command appear ?

I'm using EA 9.0.906 Corporate Edition.

Thanks,

Stéphane

Ok, I'm just stupid. "Save as profile" is not in the diagram's context menu in the project browser, but in the context menu of the diagram itself.

On the other hand: where is the workspace and commands dialog? Still cannot find it.

That's not the only place where EA isn't orthogonal.

I understood that in order to create a toolbox, and not a profile, one should right click on the diagram, not the package, and click "save as profile".
It isn't about what is right or wrong; it's about what is more convenient.

It's usually more convenient to save toolbox profiles from the diagram rather than the package, because you are likely to want more than one toolbox profile, and you can define them all in the same package: one package, multiple diagrams.

And it's often more convenient to save UML profiles (the ones that define your stereotypes) from the package rather than the diagram, especially if you have a lot of stereotypes. For example, the UPDM profile has about 200 stereotypes and you wouldn't want to put that many «stereotype» classes on a single diagram.

So choose whichever method makes most sense in each situation.
