several items
« on: February 19, 2003, 11:32:12 am »
Sorry for the “laundry list”, but I feel it is a good way to dump a lot of comments and questions.  Also, like to apologize for the terse descriptions at times. Thanks in advance for your help and comments.  Build 600

1.      Maybe EA supports this and I don’t’ know how to do it. I’ve been trying to automatic translating to and from sequence diagrams to Collaboration Diagrams.
2.      We use the Rational business use case icons and business use case realizations icons, is there a way to utilize them.  Seems like stereotype bitmaps and/or a profile might work but I’ve had little luck.
3.      Multiple instances on the same diagram are almost a showstopper?  We try to diagram extensively and produce “trace” diagrams showing the relationships between requirements, analysis, design, and deployment elements.  This is almost impossible to verify or manage with the single instance limitation.  Our current work around is lots of diagrams.  This won’t fly long term.
4.      Yes I know it’s Rationale’s problem but Import/export to Rose is critical for use with many of the people I know.  Yes it imports if you can call it that.  Basically, the diagrams need to be a responsible representation of the diagram in EA.  No editing in Rose is needed.
5.      Project data seems to be associated with the whole model, shouldn't it be the Root Nodes?  I get multiple projects in the same model.  Is this a bad idea?.
6.      Improved control over what is visible on the diagram for each element.  For example show stereotypes, public members only for class ABC something different for class DEF.  It seems when you use anything but a class many of the visibility options don’t seem to work.  Any idea what I’m doing wrong.
7.      This is related to number 6.  Show Package content is a little misleading.  It would be nice if you could select specifically which elements from the package are visible on a specific diagram.
8.      The only way I’ve found to relocate an object is to move it in the tree.  If there are a large number of objects this can be an extremely painful effort.  Also, Copy to Location causes the diagram element to move down and to the left.  Other than using the tree control in the workspace it would be nice if you could just relocate a diagram element to the location of the diagram with a right mouse button menu.
Answered 9.      I can’t seem to attach Note links to anything, i.e. an association.  It seems like note links should be able to be attached to whatever and however many.  Or am I just missing something?
10.      Need to be able to create additional glossary categories.  As well as associated different definitions to the same glossary element.  This would be similar to a dictionary entry with multiple definitions.
11.      Spell check was not picking up labels on associations (class that references itself).
Answered 12.      Moving association instead of delete and add them.  I think I’m doing something wrong but I did not get anything out of the help (it’s probably there).
13.      Tab order in various dialogs containing "tab controls" never changes focus to the "tab control", must use mouse to navigate tabs.
14.      Requirement name are limited to 12 characters, seems a bit small. I hate abbr. and ACRMS.
15.      Can’t delete root nodes or just certain ones, not sure which ones or why.  Any thoughts?
16.      “New element” menu chose does not work correctly on all nodes on the workspace tree nodes.  Also clueless as to what the rules are, or should there even be any rules.
17.      When importing and exporting I would like to stipulate which sub packages to include or not to include.  This is similar to Rational Rose.  That’s not why I think it’s a good idea.  Generally I like to organize my projects (usually 5 – 10 active projects at a time) in tightly coupled packages that are easily reused.  The sub or child packages may or may not be required to reuse the parent package.
18.      Exporting all reference data causes an error when importing.  Not sure what went wrong here.
Answered 19.      Diagram elements like notes are on a tool bar, which is nice since they can be used anywhere but drop and drag for positioning would be even be nicer.
20.      It would be nice to be able to attach files to diagram, or any thing else for that matter, Some external documents describe the diagram, not just the elements.  The notes are ok but a word document would be much better.
21.      Embedding the editor of my choosing in various dialogs would be great.  I know this is not trivial but it would be really-really nice. This way I can use Word or a programming editor.
22.      It would be nice to be able to open a linked file from the dialog box.
23.      Defaults in dialog boxes. I would like to set up defaults for the combo boxes (and other controls), for all the dialog boxes within the system.
24.      Looks like a minor oversight but there is no Browse option for setting up the default project directory.
25.      Requirements, issues, changes, and defects.  This could turn into it’s own project but I have listed a few concerns.  Reporting is missing is some cases.  If you use the object representation for the artifact (ex. issue) it does not show up in the issue list.

Thank you again

Hi Shawn,

I like the tone and intention of your posting; however, let me remark that most of us here are pretty busy people who manage to steal some job, family, evening news --or whatever-- time to try to answer forum questions. Let me suggest for you to prioritize the items in your list, so we wan discuss them in a more focused way.

Well I'm sorry for the confusion, but I felt and still do that I'm not the only one with these questions and concerns.  I also understand you point Jaime.  If you feel it would be easier if I submitted 25 distinct messages I will be happy to do so.  In terms of priority, with the exception to Rational Rose and the multiple instance issue the priorities are the same, with the aforementioned having high priority.

Thank You,

slj

G'day,

Shawn, as people reply to specific items in your laundry list, maybe you can modify your original post to indicate which items have been satisfied, maybe by striking out the item or something.  Any elaborations on any of the items could be put in italics or something.  It'll make it easier and more tempting for the rest of us to address each item.

In the meantime, I'll take a crack at 5, 7, and 9.

5) I don't see a problem with multiple projects in the same model.  That gives a chance to re-use artifacts amongst your projects.  It's all up to you really.  Your project data would then be common amongst a bunch of projects.

7)  Until the full plethora of possibilities that everybody can come up with can be handled by EA, maybe you can re-organize your packages and sub-packages.

9) Note links attach just fine between any note an any other object.  You can link a note to any number of objects you want.  To put a note on a relationship, right-click on the relationship (in your diagram) and pick "Attach Note or Contraint";  link that note to as many relationships as you want.
Cheers and best regards.

Shawn,

fwiw, issue #11 - Rose/RequistePro doesn't spell check on labels or "entry items", only the main text.

Jason Veniot thank you for your suggestion on the maintenance of the list, I will begin marking it up ASAP.  I don’t know how I missed it so thanks again on the Note Link to an Association.

Just for the record I'm not doing a compare and contrast of EA with Rational Rose.  My intent since many of you seem to have Rose experience was to use the references to Rose for clarification.  I have used Rational Rose literally since version 1 with the old cloud diagrams.  I have been promoting EA for some time with little success.  All of the companies still buy Rose and I have continued to use it (can’t get fired for hiring Rational).  However, with the last two versions I’m making headway but there still are some concerns.  I felt this was a good way to get my questions, comments, and concerns out for discussion and to help me better understand the product so I can fairly represent it.  As always I’m always thankful for any input.

G'day,

12) Right-click on the association, and use the "Set Source and Target ..." menu item.

19) Instead of using the toolbar for notes, right-click on your diagram at the location you want to drop a note, and use the "Insert Element at Cursor ... " menu item.

20) How's about using hyperlinks and putting them on your diagram?  I think that would be better visually than setting some kind of link in the properties of the diagram, if there were such a link.

Hello!

Does anybody know about question 1?  I was going to post this question, or one similar, but found it here ;).

We like to go through the process from use case to sequence diagram to class diagrams.  It seems like EA should support this with ease.  It should be able to create a set of classes from a set of sequence diagrams right?

I can't find this feature, any help is greatly appreciated.

In question 1. I mention translation to and from sequence and colaboration diagrams.  This are really the same diagram with different layout.  I don't believe you are asking the same question.  I think yours is really a usability question about EA that I not best suited to answer.  It may be better to post a seperate question.  Sorry I could not be more helpfull.
