RTF, MS-Word and templates
« on: May 30, 2005, 04:39:50 am »
I've got a question about the new rtf template editor. When I use a main document in MS-Word and insert a rtf document generated with EA as a subdocument I get a message saying that the subdocument is using a different template.

How can I prevent this message from popping up? Do I have to create the same style, with the same names in EA?
Thanx and best regards,

Kobus.

Just so you know you are not alone, I get a message that tells me 'Fields are nested too deeply' when I do a similar thing (i.e. imbed my EA generated rtf document as a linked file in Word).

I think there are still a number of quirks to be worked thru with the new RTF generator tool.

It's just the same as with the previous RTF generator, Sparx has made a choice for a couple of default styles that they use (and the RTF also needs to include the style definitions for these styles). This results in the fact that MS Word will report the message you indicate when the already defined style definition in MS Word differs from the style definition in the RTF.

So what to do?
1) You could answer the message of MS Word by telling to keep the style definitions of the master document (which will override the RTF styles);
2) You could tweak the RTF style definition templates used by EA;
3) You could tweak the master document (MS Word) style definitions to match the EA RTF styles;

Step 1 is the most easy and recommended. If you like other styles (another name, not another definition for the same style) to be used, then you'll have to fall back on step 2.

Currently working at home and have to install v5 of EA to explain step 2 (and have to close Internet Explorer for that). I'll try to find out the steps needed to take step 2.

Follow-up:

1) Changing the style used for a particular section: select particular text to change and select another existing style from dropdown box in toolbar;

2) Create a new style to be used:
a) Same as 3, but in step 3b select create new style, enter name (all other steps are the same);

3) This is a bit unconventional:
a) Select Edit style... from the Edit menu;
b) Select style to edit and press OK;
c) Open Edit menu to see that the Edit style... menuoption is now selected (meaning that your selected style is under change);
d) Make style changes using the menus (don't do anything with the actual document that is displayed);
e) Open Edit menu and select Edit style... again to end style editing;

Thanx Tjerk.

I did already know how to change styles etc, and indeed it is a bit odd the way it is implemented. Creating styles with the same names and which are exactly the same as in the main document didn't do the trick however. You will still get the message!

I let Word change the template of the subdocuments to the main document Word template.

But meanwhile I'm starting to wonder if this is the way I want to go. See my new post: "Is the RTF generator the way to go for EA?" in the Suggestion and Request forum.

Greetings and thanx anyhow.
Thanx and best regards,
