No need to use the automation interface it seems. You can use the "Put Latest" option in the context sensitive menu you see when right clicking whilst selecting a controlled package in the project browser. This option becomes available on that menu when you have checked out the package. Selecting the option initiates an xml export.

this help looks great.

Yes, the documentation about the api isn't one of the brilliant sides of EA. I already have an official support request for this clearcase problem, but didn't get an answer. So my experience here matches your's.

I hope they will optimise here.
