Link Collapsed Subprocess to expanded Subprocess
« on: April 05, 2006, 11:00:36 am »
How is this accomplished in the BPMN Add-In?
What we need, conceptually, is a way to double click on a sub-process (plus-in-a-box) and have it open a new workspace to expand the subprocess as a child diagram.
As a case in point, The 'Structured Activity' in the tool box (outside of BPMN) has the infiniity symbol decoration. When you double click on that decoration, it opens another workspace to create the child diagram.  And they become linked.  Is their a counterpart to this functionality with the Subprocess Activity in the BPMN add-on?
I couldnt find anything about this in the Help file.
Thanks!

You can usually create your own composite elements. Try right-clicking on an element. From the context menu choose Advance Settings, then Composite Element. You will see the 'infinity' glyph on the element, and a new diagram of the appropriate type with the same name as the element will be created and linked.

Strangely, I have not even tried this on BPMN elements, but since they are stereotyped elements this should work.

Please report back in this thread to let us know how (if) it works.

Yes, this works for BPMN too! Thanks.
I right-clicked on a collapsed BPMN 'Sub-Process' element and followed your directions above. A new workspace opens up and you can flow-out the expanded Sub-Process activities there.  When you are done, the decomposed process (expanded sub-processs) can be accessed from the parent model by double-clicking on the collpsed Sub-Process activity element or by selecting the appropriate tab that displays just below the workspace.   Additionally, you can access it in the tree of the Project View, under the parent model.
I hope this made sense.

Totally.

Thanks as well for the feedback. This will certainly save me time down the line. I've barely had time to scratch the surface of the BPMN add-in. It arrived just a bit too late to use in one initiative, but I think it will have great value in another. In between I have been concentrating entirely on another aspect of modelling - still with EA.

Of course, we'll all hope for continued evolution of EA's support for BPMN. Perhaps a pi-calculus validator...
