Installation problem
« on: April 06, 2006, 06:49:27 am »
I'm a newbie with EA.  I've installed the application on my laptop connected to the corporate network.  When I work disconnected from the network I get an error message.  I'm assuming this is an issue with a key location or some such problem.  Can anybody shed some light on this problem?

TIA

Brad

Hi,

can you possibly share the text of the error message?

Bruno,

Here is the content of the error message that is displayed in a standard Windows error message box:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Progarm: C:\Program Files\Sparx Systems\EA\EA.exe

abnormal program termination"

Hi Brad,

do you receive this message when starting EA? Which edition of EA do you use? Which version/build?

How was EA installed? If it was done across your network, and particularly if other software is often installed this way, it is possible (IMHO) that some files are available via a network share. If the runtime library is accessed via such a share you'll crash when EA tries to access this file.

Check your path statement (usually via Control Panel / System, etc.) to see if there is a reference to some network location, particularly if it is before any reference to your <<windows home>>\System32 (or \System) folder.

I'm not sure, but perhaps EA stores the location of support files in the registry. If that's the case you might fail even if you have a local copy, if EA looks for the file in the last-known-good location.

I am guessing here, so any comments from the Sparx folks?

David

I'm running EA V 6.1.787 Build 787.  I initially installed the application without having the laptop sync. with network drives, but turned it on afterwards.  That's when this problem occurred.  I'm sure that there's a registry setting or a file/config pointer problem that I am unable to find.

It might be part of a domain setting if you are using a domain account when attached to the network. Take a look when connected.

I don't know if you'll need to reinstall EA, on top of the original installation, if you have different configurations. My gut feel is that, if this is something from the registry - it would be an application-wide setting, and unlikely to adjust based on per-user configuration.
