EA and EA Lite backward compatibility
« on: October 11, 2006, 03:43:53 am »
Hello !   Within IT we are using the latest build of version 6.5 of EA,  but we have many users who already have EA Lite 6.1 build 789 installed to allow model review.   It would help us a lot if we didn't have to keep upgrading the user desktops with the latest version of EA Lite.   So,  is it OK to to operate with different versions like this ? - In other words how does backward compatibility of the models work with EA ?

thanks

There's no way to guarantee that you will be seeing the same thing with 6.5.798 versus 6.1.789 because there have been a number of bug fixes that have changed the way elements are rendered.

Have you considered creating HTML documentation for the "read-only" users?

Thanks for the fast response KP.

HTML documentation is certainly an option.

Regarding versions,   would you say that if everyone is on the same version, e.g. 6.5  but the users may be on an older build, that that would work ?

I guess that Neil did say the opposite. However, if there's anything leading to a wrong display all users would see it the same wrong way. You might simply wait for one user to complain. As long as they just read they at least will not clobber the model.

In general having users with different builds should be fine.  Especially for the LITE edition since it can't change anything.  Yes, there may be some display differences between builds, but they aren't that common or dramatic.  Sometimes they wouldn't even be noticed except if comparing two diagrams side by side.

Of course, the closer the builds are, the less likely it will be to have these changes.
