Tagged Values
« on: November 28, 2007, 10:36:13 am »
I defined a list of tagged values for one projet in EA and now want to use the same tagged values for a few other EA projects.

How can I export these tagged values from one EA project to another? I tried using the Export Reference Data functionality but tagged Values wasn't one of the available choices to export in the Export Reference Data dialog.

I was quite sure that this had been asked (some time ago). But I can't find the thread  :-/

I suspect that you would need to create a profile, which could then be exported to other projects. I don't know if you can easily do this from your current project though.

Perhaps you can export tagged value types as reference data, but I doubt this will help in the current context.
No, you can't have it!

Export Reference Data.  Select Property Types.

Claudia,

Please let us know if this solves the problem. I'll amend my earlier post as required.

Simon: Please touch base with Roy, or I'll send a note if you want. We should probably update the documentation to provide a mapping between reference data section names and what they cover. Many of the names are obvious in hindsight only; they can be a real stumbling block the first time you need something new.

It work but you have to activate them in order to use them for the  first time.

Thanks

open up the tagged values dialog while you select an element. after that they display on their own when you select tagged Values form teh View menu.

David

See the Export Reference Data topic in the Help. Is the list of data types at the end still ambiguous? The only two I haven't managed to pin down are Templates - RTF Style Detail and Templates - HTML Style Detail.

I have also added notes to as many data topics as possible to state that you can export and import the items as reference data. I thought that this would be in the 7.0 Build 818 Help, but many people are still working with earlier versions.
Best Regards, Roy

I've looked in the 818 help Roy - I did make sure it was the correct version.

When I use the index, I'm presented with a single page (for export) that has little information.

When I go through the contents, I have a general introductory page on Reference Data (versus the Export Reference Data page itself); this page shows a list at the end.

If I click UML in this list I go to the UML Types page. If I then click Tagged Values, I get a page that talks about tagged value types - so far so good - but does not mention where they are found (i.e. what name they are given) in the Export Reference Data dialog. [The import dialog is slightly easier to use, since it only lists what's found in the import file.]

So, I still don't see a clear pointer to what a given 'chunk' of reference data represents in EA. That doesn't mean it is not there, just that I'm not seeing it.

I think the places I am looking are reasonable for somebody trying to figure this out. So someone following the same path I use might get confused, or think a given type of data is not there or cannot be transferred.

Hi David

I think I see the problem - you are using the Help on the website? It is well out of date, but I hope it will be refreshed soon with the release of EA 7.1.

if you use the Help within EA 7.0 Build 818, and go to the Export Reference Data topic (via the same text in the index) you will - I hope - find a very long list of reference data types at the end of the topic. Each item links to the topic on that data type elsewhere in the Help.

If you were to get to one of those topics by some other path, you would find that it has a note at the end saying that you can export the data type you have just defined, as reference data and import it into another project - with a hyperlink back to the export and import topics. The only exception (as Sod's Law dictates) is the very topic you went to - tagged Values (although strictly speaking that topic refers to tagged Value Types). I have put the note and links into that one too, now.

Please let me know if things still are not working.
Best Regards, Roy

That's exactly what I thought I was doing Roy, looking at the HTML help file I downloaded as part of the build 818 release.

My file is dated as last modified 2007-10-29. This agrees with the 818 release date. I'm downloading another copy just in case.

Still, what are we missing?

David

LATER: Roy: I've checked, and I still don't see it. Please send me an email with a screen shot of where I should be looking, and we'll figure it out from there.

Email sent. This is a puzzler!

How many hours are you behind the Forum clock? Shouldn't you be getting some sleep for a hard day's work ahead??
