BPMN Gateways
« on: March 08, 2009, 08:08:46 am »
I am using EA version 7.0. How does one show the different gateways (and, or , xor, complex), activity loops, event types, etc?

I see the basic gateway and activity but I can find no way to show the specific types of gateways otr other specific language constructs.

EA uses tagged values and shape scripts to display BPMN elements (and such).

[Note: This is true for some other profiles as well, most notably SysML and the various business modeling profiles that have been added recently.]

In your project open the Tagged Values window - you can do this from the main menu via View | Tagged Values, or you can use the keyboard shortcut control-shift-6. Note that you can dock this window, perhaps in a group with other 'utility' windows. EA should remember if this window is open and docked, restoring it in later sessions.

Select one of your BPMN gateways. When you look at the tagged values, you will see some that represent the 'extended' properties of the gateway. When you look you will see what I mean; the naming conventions are pretty self-evident. Where appropriate the tagged values are set up as list selections. For these tags the list will be visible when you click in the value section, and you just need to select the value you need. For a few tags you will need to enter a value; these cases are also pretty clear when you run into them.

The shape scripts that draw the elements and connectors test the values of these tags, and will redraw themselves when the tags are set. You should get the graphics you need. Try this will other elements - use the ones you've listed as starting points - and things will fall into place quickly.
