Saving diagrams in SVG format
« on: January 20, 2010, 05:08:05 pm »
EA does not currently support saving a diagram in SVG format (Sparx have confirmed this).  However I have a group of users for whom this is a key requirement.

Is anybody aware of any way around this, including use of third party tools or transforms?

David,

If you mean diagram, as in a Jpeg or PNG output then the popular solution for this type of enquiry is the open source product Inkscape:

http://www.inkscape.org/

Where you can inport variou forms of data and out put the required vector graphics.

But if you mean the actual models themselves, with composite levels and so on, I am not sure this is possible.

I hope this helps.

Simon

Thanks for raising a discussion about this useful feature which some competing solutions do have. I would like to see the HTML Documentation sport SVG capabilities.

A lot of corporate clients that use tools like Telelogic System Architect have found this feature useful.

I raised a feature request on this a few years ago but nothing happened.

Please, raise a feature request.

@Simon:  I am talking about being able to save a diagram (not the underlying model) as an SVG file instead of one of the other formats.  The reason is that one of our teams generates the UML models using another paradigm (please, don't ask!), and wants to be able to store the UML image alongside their source data in an XML repository.  I will follow up Inkscape - even if I can do a conversion as an interim solution it would be an advantage.

@Segun: I will certainly raise a request.  You are correct that other tools provide SVG, and I am trying to standardise all our teams on one tool (EA), which involves moving one team away from MagicDraw (which does the SVG thing!).  The lack of SVG is a blockage for them moving.  However to date I have been happy enough with the existing HTML output, although we haven't used this "in anger" yet.

Hi David,
you can save diagrams as enhanced metafiles, a kind of vector graphics format.

You can import emf files using, e.g. inkscape and save them as svg.

Sounds good but I tried it and the image got screwed up but it might be something you could try.

Cheers,
Andrew.
