Toolbox Profile sample?
« on: September 09, 2010, 01:34:59 am »
Hey all,
is there a working sample Toolbox Profile with a real UML pProfile association so that I could actually see the links between names, aliases, shape scripts of stereotypes and whatnot...after reading the topic in the user guide for some time I find it a real mess ... >:(

Thank you, sarcastic Geert! :P,

but you see - what I'd like to be able to is see it loaded as a package, so that I could inspect the relations of the necessary metaclasses and stereotypes and their impacts; if you can help me in transforming a 'profile xmi' into a 'package xmi', instead of 'Geert Sarcastic' I'll dub you 'Geert the Master'! ;)

You can't transform a XMI into a package for a profile. Heaven know why because EA can read and interpret the profile (obviously). I was in discussion about that with Sparx' support and even they did not get why it's not possible. Still, we're waiting.

What else? It took me quite some days of intensive work to dig the profile. Now I can call myself master of disaster. At least I can sell my knowledge to companies that migrated to EA...

Well, it is great to hear words from the master...so maybe you could even help me and provide me with a sample profile ( in a package format) which, when transformed, is using the toolbox pages and toolbox icons? :)

Looks like my last sentence wasn't clear enough.

Maybe if I find the time next week I'll publish something on the community site.

If you put it this way, I do not make any assumptions about seeing any result in the future, at all ... 8-) If you'd be so kind and dropped me a link or any hint on my email, I'd be really grateful.

You may be right, busy bee. I'm still enjoying a nice stay in hospital... What about following my suggested approach to sit down for a couple of days to LEARN it. It is possible. And the documentation is really not too bad. Despite my other critics against EA I think that their help is quite useful. And they care to keep it up to date. It's simply a matter of complexity. Of course I'd have saved my couple of days if I had someone sitting on my lap giving me the right hints. Since I'm a freelancer I had to invest that on my own. As employee I'd voted to hire a consultant. Just go and ask Sparx.

I totally agree with you and instead of conquering one part of the problem area - becoming the master of the whole problem area is the best one can do.:-) Even my original rants about the documentation are now something I would not be saying again, but what I am missing is just one A4 page devoted to a high level view of the topic; the manual goes right into the business of implementing profiles without any prior introduction ( well, I am concerned mostly about the toolbox pages).
Hope your stay in hospital is coming to an end and you are all well now! Thanks for your insights...

You're welcome. I'll try to do that these days and will post it on the community site. Things look quite good and having spare time has its advantages. I'll add the link later when it's published.

b.

[edit:] I just started and already have two pages plain text - and only for intro and parts of the profile. So it will definitely not be something on one page. I also found that it is difficult to create a profile without good knowledge of the domain. I'll get that into grip but it's really tough.

Announced for tomorrow. That will also hopefully be the time I send the article for approval which in turn will take a couple of days. I could also send you the contents via PM if you provide your mail address via PM.
