Activation levels & lifetimes in Sequence Diagrams

Is there a good detailed description of Activation Levels in Sequence diagrams? I keep finding places where EA doesn't seem to offer the ability to raise or lower levels to match what actually happens.

This seems to be related to the lifetime of Activations on lifelines. There are times when I just don't seem to be able to make an activation continue.
