Same activity performed by two participants
« on: October 07, 2011, 04:34:44 pm »
Hi guys

I was wondering how to represent the following scenario in a BPMN diagram:

Two participants (i.e. two lanes) both perform the same activity at the same time. For example, two participants have a meeting together in order to make a decision.

Can you have the activity sitting across the two lanes? Or should you use a parallel gateway merging into two of the same activities in each lane?

Thank you  :)
Helen

I'm not a BPMN expert but I believe if you're using BPMN 2.0 you could use the new Choreography, Collaboration or Conversation constructs to model this kind of situation.

I'd simply extend the activity so it overlaps the two partitions. However, it must be placed physically (Project Explorer) in one of the two lanes.

Thank you for your responses,

Yes what I have done was extend the activity so it crosses over into both lanes, but I just wasnt sure whether that was 'legal' in BPMN 2.0 notation...

Thanks again

Anything is legal as long as you have a good explanation. Just think about what you are trying to say. If you find your thoughts being expressed well, then it's okay.
