Taking a Longgg Time to Load HTML Version
« on: January 04, 2012, 04:56:03 am »
Hi all,

I have been working with EA (version 7.5) for about a year in order to document business processes at an organization. Relatively few people here need to create/edit in EA, so few people have EA licenses. However, the audience for viewing the business process model is large, so we have been exporting the model to HTML on a weekly basis for people to view through their browser (various versions of IE across the organization). The HTML version is located on a server.

What began as a manageable wait of a few minutes to load the HTML version into the browser has now ballooned as the process model has grown. Depending on the user's hardware/software configuration, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes on my computer to over 60 minutes for other users with slower computers. I believe we are at around 10,000 elements being exported for the HTML.

I could chunk out the model, so that I export it in 3 or 4 separate chunks that could load separately, but it would involve some effort in reconfiguring the model and, because a lot of our processes are cross-departmental, would not be ideal because some users would still need to load all the chunks.

I have asked a few people who need to access frequently to download and install the EA Lite viewer. However, there will eventually be 100s of people accessing the model and having all the users download and install the viewer is not something the organization wants to do if they don't have to.

Has anyone come up with a better solution for enabling 100s of users to view a model of this size? How much could be improved by putting it on a faster/better server? Or is performance completely dependent on the users' computers?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just wanted to post an update for anyone browsing the forums and looking for help on this topic...

After some testing, we've found that performance is very browser-dependent. Most of the users here use IE7 which is horrible (45 to 60 minutes to load). IE8, which I've been using, is a little better (10 to 15 minutes). IE9 and Google Chrome are pretty much instantaneous.

How to get all the users on an updated browser is another issue, but thought the info might help someone.

Cheers...

Thanks for the update.
BTW I've seen quite a lot of complaints here on the forum about the html export and google chrome. Apparently some stuff is not working in Chrome, so you might want to consider that when suggesting a new  browser.

PS IE7 really ::)

Good to know that most people still use IE6. When you draw the above IE9/8/7 times and interpolate IE6 the load time should be a couple of hours.

Thanks for the update Paula.

Yes the old IE6  ::) it is surprising and sad really :'( to see how much IE6 is still used as the standard (and often only) browser in big corporate organizations or government departments.
