Setting diagram size to larger than A4
« on: December 18, 2013, 12:12:09 am »
Hi everybody,

maybe a stupid question: Where can i define a page layout larger than DIN A4, e.g. DIN A3?

I can not find an appropriate setting.

Thanks for you help.

Best regards, Stefan

Thanks, Helmut.

I've already found that. But when I click

Advanced... -> Page Setup

only A4 appears. But I want to export/print to A3 or A2. Where can I set other formats?

Thanks, Stefan

Hello Stefan,

then click Page Setup. There you can select the desired page layout.

By the way: The parameter scale to 1 page is often useful.

In the page setup dialogue, there is unfortunately no A3- or A2-entry available.

If I select A4 and "Scale to 1 page" the generated pdf file is sqare and does not have the aspect ratio of DIN A4.

Thanks again,
Stefan

Hello Stefan,

I'm not sure but I think EA uses the possibilities of the EA standard printer. It is defined in File, PrintSetup.

Fit to 1 page not always gives you the results you want. Up to know I have always found a way to print the diagram.

It probably only suggests sizes supported by the selected printer. Try using a PDF printer (like FreePDF) and see what it comes up with. Use the Source drop down  below the Paper Size to select the printer.

Printing to larger diagram sizes directly from Sparx is just one of those things that I know will never be fixed by the developers.

It's never worked simply or as it should. Getting any diagram directly printed from Sparx requires fiddling around, cancelling print output that look correct in terms of settings, and looks correct in preview, but still prints a single A2 diagram as a series of A4 diagrams.

I have an Epson A2 Stylus Pro 3880 printer that I use for architecture diagrams only. It works as it should with every other software tool I have. Not Sparx.

The only way I can get printed diagrams from Sparx to reliably print to a large format printer or roll plotter is to generate a pdf and print that.

Even when all elements and borders on a diagram fits well within the borders of an A2 printed page, Sparx wants to create a second blank output page with nothing on it, just borders. Which ruins a perfectly good piece of A2 paper.

I don't think they're aware printers come in sizes larger than A4. They must not use them.

I've given up expecting that this will ever be fixed. I don't bother complaining about it. Submitting defect reports and feature requests is a complete waste of time.

I've never experienced any issues with regards to printing diagrams on either A4 or A3.
Somehow it always does exactly what I expect it to do.

I do usually set my printing preferences for a diagram in the page setup/Print Advanced settings of the diagram before I hit the print button.

Thanks everybody.

The problem maybe is, if there is no A3/A2-printer connected to your computer, you're not able/allowed to export A3/A2-pdfs. I (of course) do not have such a printer in my office, but I want to be able to export A3, A2, ... and take it to my copy-shop.

I will give Sparx a call, as I'm not happy about installing a pdf printer.

Best regards,
Stefan

OK, I found a solution that fits for me.

- Install a pdf printer
- make it your default printer!!!
- start EA again
- Be happy

I've noticed a similar problem in that if I have a large Business Process Diagram that extends over 3 pages or A4, when I print it I get 6 pages as every page is followed by a blank page.

I cannot see how to cure this and have resorted to printing in PDF, then using a PDF editor to delete the blank pages.

Any tips anyone ?

Printing is still black magic. Maybe it's an issue with A4 to letter conversion?

I don't know, as I pick A4 as the paper size.

I did try defaulting the printer to my PrimoPDF software, but this generated an error every time I tried to print.

What other PDF printer would be good for me to try ?
