Business Capability Model
« on: December 01, 2014, 02:35:12 pm »
Hi All,

I tried searching past forums but unable to find what I am trying to do.

So I will try an explain what I am trying to do.  :o

We are about introduce a new what I would call "capability" which will transform our business and technology architectures. What I want to do is build a model which will demonstrate the following:
1. The period of the capability development
2. The stages of capability development
3. The core placeholders (Activities) for the capability development
4. Optional - Benefits realized.

My intent is to present this one page model to help facilitate conversation with various stakeholders and assist the development of the program of work for the change.

My question is, has anyone built such a model and if so what is the best diagram type in EA to assist with this activity?

Thanks in advance,

Stoppy!  ;)

An Enterprise Capability Map is a business architecture output generally done as a consulting engagement. No reason why you can't do it yourself in your organisation.

Are you focusing on a single business capability? Or all of them? Can you give us an example of what you are calling a business capability?

Creating the diagram is the easy part.

The authority and validity of the artefact derives from a series of structured interviews with business executives, GMs, subject matter experts, and IT people.

Interestingly you may find senior business stakeholders disagree among themselves - often stridently - about basic facts that  define their own organisation. Which perhaps highlights the value in doing one.

Bus Cap Map ("The Anchor Model") is often based on a "Capability Maturity Assessment" (CMM). Which defines multiple broad categories of performance, the maturity of which is estimated by stakeholders through a structured survey.

Capability Map - Google what Forrester says as just one initial point of reference.

"Stages of capability development" - Google SEI CMU CMM and you will find information there. The 0 ... 5 or 6 model.

"Benefits Realisation" - Google MSP from Axelos - and NSW Gov.

Cheers.

Hi Thelonius,

Thanks for the overview in your post, very good summary.

Unfortunately, we are small organization and still developing our governance. I won't mention the capability, but yes it is a single capability of many capabilities on foot at the moment, and the intent of my model is try and communicate the size and depth and impact to the executive so the relevant strategies can be developed to ensure a successful implementation.

I am just using a custom diagram at the moment and using different elements from various toolboxs to articulate certain items. Basic description of my model so far:
Phases (BPMN Activity - Stereotype set to process)
Packages of Work (BPMN Activity)
Milestones - (BPMN Gateway)
Timeline - Not sure what to do here???
Disciplines - (BPMN Pool - Change Management, Project Management, Capability)

Regards,

Stoppy :)

Update - Change in a approach:

Phases (BPMN Activity - Stereotype set to process)
Packages of Work (BPMN Activity)
Milestones - (BPMN Gateway)
Timeline - (BPMN Pools to demonstrate quarters by vertical partition, not elegant, but working atm)
Disciplines - (BPMN Activity - Stereotype set to process)

Understand if you can't mention any of your organisation's capabilities. But how about giving me an example of _any_ capability that is somewhat comparable to what you're doing.

Reason for asking: different organisations and people define things differently. There's an implicit meta model behind everything. Capability, function, process are things that I can define based on my meta model. Your meta model may be way different. A "business" capability to you can - in fact - be what I may perceive as an "IT capability". Which I would think of as part of a business capability.

If your stakeholders are not familiar with BPMN notation or that meta model, then I'd just use Visio or PowerPoint. I can speak UML, BPMN, TOGAF, and ArchiMate. Knowledge in the repository and models can be rendered using those meta models, but when I need to communicate to business stakeholders, I translate into a visual form that is easily understood by that audience.

But it sounds like you're on the right track.

Hi Thelonius,

Thanks for your reply.

The capability is introducing a new software technology which in my view will be a vehicle to assist and enable the business to manage information in its business processes in a new way and enable compliance with standards to establish good practice.

Similar to introducing a case management, project management or software like solution. We have not selected a product as that is part of the journey of defining and building the capability. I want this to be business lead change, not a IT lead change. ie. been there done that  :)

As for meta model, I understand where you are coming from, but my main intent is to use my position an knowledge to establish a model which will help facilitate the required conversations. It is been a while since I have used Visio and don't have time to wrestle with it..... :-/

Based on your last message, looks like I have to build a hybrid model to achieve the outcome I am seeking.

Thanks again!
