Notes Compartment
« on: September 06, 2006, 10:23:12 pm »
Elsewhere I asked for a Notes compartment, to get around a convoluted method to place the element's notes with the rendered image of the element.

The "workaround" was kludgey, but doable for Classes.  But in the case of behavioural elements, the hard-coded placement of the name in the centre of the rendered element militate against this...

Please, please, please can we have a Notes compartment (default - not visible).

Voting starts now...  :-X

Add my note (er, vote...)
No, you can't have it!

So... what you're after is actually two requests.

To add a notes compartment, and then to display compartments on behavioural elements.

Yes... Please.

(I obviously made a false assumption that the more generic compartments -such as constraints, requirements, testing etc- were already displayable.  Whereas Attributes and Operations applied only to structural classifiers)

Bump...

I see this missed it for 798

Any chance soon?

It's really starting to hurt as we are trying to make our model the focus of all metadata for true Model Driven Development.

Notes Compartment - Redux
« Reply #5 on: November 11, 2006, 01:29:49 am »
Sparx have indicated that the will be supporting a Notes Compartment in a near future release.  Thank you Sparxians...

It might be appropriate to hold a redux and ensure that Sparx are appraised of any issues there might be in managing the process and, hopefully, come up with a really cool implementation...

I'll kick off with some thoughts, but please feel free to add...

Need to add Notes Compartment to Diagram Properties.  This is just hygiene, but let's make sure it's not forgotten.
Need to add Notes Compartment to Show Feature Visibility.  Again, this is hygiene, but what about an option for inherited notes also?

Need to add Notes Compartment to Containers (Views, Packages, Models?).  Yes, even these can have useful narrative text added to them...

All structural vertexes (including Issues, Requirements etc) need a Notes Compartment.

Behavioural Elements need Notes Compartment.  This is mentioned above, but again, if it can get in this release all the better.

A related functionality would be the indication that there are notes present.  This would be most useful if the Notes compartment is suppressed.  My suggestion is to use something similar to the comment indicator in Microsoft Excel (the little red triangle in the top right corner).  This could be set at the global level:
[ ] Show notes indicator for Elements
[ ] Show notes indicator for Connectors
[ ] Show notes indicator for Features

(since you might have different requirements),  and overridden at the Diagram and individual Element level.

When you hover over a vertex or an edge, you get a tooltip which displays part of the notes (if present).
[ ] Show full notes in tooltip would be an excellent enhancement.

Lastly, since edges have no compartments, it is difficult to create one for them.  However, if it were possible to create a feature linked note (to the edge's Notes) in one command it would almost do the same thing.

If you are going to do that for edges, you should also be able to do it for vertexes.

Thoughts?  Votes?
