Document generation from class diagram subset
« on: September 15, 2009, 12:15:10 am »
I have created classes to build a hierarchy of business concepts in a package (taxonomy).

I have also created another package in which I am re-using the concepts as copies to create a class diagram.

I would like to create an RTF document based only on the business concepts used in the class diagram by selecting all the elements in the class diagram.

I observed there is no entry for documentation. Is it possible to enable this feature?

In the interim I'd appreciate a workaround, please!

kind regards

Segun

Something along the lines of how you can generate DDL from either an entire diagram (of a package) or the selected element, but with a bit more flexibility. That is, you could select several items.

This could even be set up so that you could select both some native elements and some foreign with respect to the package that owns the diagram, and document the set (without the owning package being an issue).

Yes, I like it!

RTF documents can be generated from Packages or single Elements but not from a Diagram.  However, if the Package simply has a diagram with no elements (the diagram consists of external elements) then a standard report can be run - just ensure the template has Package:: Diagram::Elements - set on but blank - and that the detail is layed out in the Package::Element - section.

But this still does not allow us to generate a report for a custom subset of elements (i.e. those that are currently selected).

If the diagram is shown as an element list you will be able to do this.  You can also report on the selected elements of a search.

Simon,

By "this" do you mean reporting from a diagram, or reporting only the selected subset of elements on a diagram?

Either way you have provided two valuable insights...
