How to import vsdx files
« on: February 24, 2023, 08:30:50 pm »
Hello everyone

I am using EA 15.2.1559 and I want to import a Visio .vsdx diagram. I found this, but I am afraid that the website is i) describing a different version, because I see no extension menu and ii) that I do not have the permissions to install a new extension due to corporate IT restrictions.

Do you see an easy way to import vsdx diagrams?

Best regards
Martin

You need to down load the visio MDG importer. https://sparxsystems.com/registered/reg_ea_down.html. In order to do that you need to have a login which you are given the first year after purchasing Sparx EA then its renewed when you purchase support.

Ask your boss to get operator rights in order to install something. Or have someone do it on your behalf. Not sure if you will be too happy with the Visio import, though. Visio is a primarily a drawing tool and not a modeling tool. It's like you want to get a statue from photos taken of it.

One more thing is you need visio too otherwise the visio importer won't work.

To everyone: thanks for your advice.

But when I have to have visio for the importer to work then I won't need the importer anymore. I just need a way to get those old diagrams in an editable format. :(

Thanks, but I have no permission to install another office suite. This is regulated by corporate IT governance.

Or try a web based free Visio viewer:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ww/microsoft-365/visio/free-visio-viewer
I think the OP specifically needs to be able to edit a Visio diagram. Viewing can be done with a browser as well IIRC.

What and they don't provide visio? Can you not put in a request for software. If not then it sounds like you don't have an environment fit for purpose.

I would say it is part of moving away from visio. If you give access to it, people will keep using it.

Well if you want to use diagrams in visio format then you should have migrated them before removing visio from the environment. The situation may not be of your creation however the fact is you need to find a solution around it. If you want to port visio diagrams to sparx you need visio  mdg visio importer and sparx EA.

That, or you simply recreate the diagrams in EA.

To be honest, often that is the better solution. Importing stuff like visio into EA creates a lot of garbage that needs cleaning. Often it even takes less time to recreate the diagrams than it does to clean them after importing.

That is true what Geert says. Some visio diagrams import quite well but a lot don't. So a fair amount of manual tidying up is required. I often use javascript to automate the tidying up. However not everything can be automated.

I hope that I will have such skills one day. Sounds good.
