Denote Lifecycle of an Element

Capture element lifetimes using messages denoted as New or Delete message types

Action

Double-click on a message within a Sequence diagram to display the Properties window for the Message.

In the 'Lifecycle' field, click on the drop-down arrow and select 'New' or 'Delete'.

Click on the OK button to save the changes.

This example shows two elements that have specific creation and deletion times. An example of denoting the Lifecycle in a UML Sequence diagram using Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect.

Notes

  • To show the termination X on the lifeline in the example diagram, you must switch on garbage collection: 'Start > Appearance > Preferences > Preferences > Diagram > Sequence: Garbage Collect'
