RTF generator embedding control characters

I am creating my use cases out of EA using the RTF generator and I am getting a bunch of control characters in my external rules which I associated to the use case. When I use the exact same template to generate pdf, the document is generated perfectly. For example in the RTF format I am getting  a string of commands in text such as '\LSiv10\sa1\marglsxn1800'  - reems of that stuff! Any ideas on how to get rid of the pesky control characters?
.. and please don't tell me just to use PDF - I am the EA trail blazer -  the first person in my company using this product, so alot of eyes are on solving this problem.
