EA 9.3 hangs with Win7
« on: April 11, 2013, 05:33:26 am »
Hello,

Written to support last week but didn't get any answer so I'll take a chance with the community. Here's what I sent to them last week;

Quote
Hello,

We got an issue in our current project with Enterprise Architect version 9.3 since a few weeks now and I was wondering if you got any clue on this.

There’s several architects and developers working on a single EAP (MDB) file. I know that’s not the ideal solution for such a scope but for several reasons, we can’t migrate to Oracle for now. For some reason, users on Windows 7 64 bits got a freeze once and then while editing diagrams. Other users are on Windows XP and didn’t get those frozen issues but can't save because Win7 users lock the database.

Most of the hangs appears while a user is renaming an object, adding an object to a schema or removing a link between two objects.

At first, I thought it was because the MDB file was over requested by users but since it’s seems more an OS issue, I wonder if you got something in your support database on this.

Any ideas ? I loose about 2 hours every day of work because of this :(

Thanks a lot

Definitely this is no solution. MSAccess is a single user database - which somehow does not break immediately if multiple users are working on it.

Can't you setup a simply MySQL? This is a once day job. It will happily let you and your modelers work on a shared model.

Well, I wish we could but it's not an option at the moment.

Actually, I should let our technical support look for a solution but I'm getting impatient about this issue. Technical support don't have my problem, I do and I loose about two hours daily on this.

I wonder if going from 9.3.1 to 9.3.5 could help though, I'll ask for it.

If a central DMBS is not an option for you, you shouldn't replace it with a centrally accessible .eap file. In this case its better to use version controlled packages and every developer has it's own local .eap copy IMHO.

Well, we'll probably create VM with XP for people under Win7, until we go to Oracle or others.

Thanks for your help folks!

Not really, but at least I can work. Hopefully, we'll change version soon, or, at least, going to an Oracle database.
