Selecting an object moves it (v10)
« on: May 23, 2013, 06:36:56 am »
The separate thread on moving messages prompts me to ask if you have this problem,
something that for me seems more prounced in v10.

Most times when I click on an object to select it the selection also makes the object move slightly.
It seem to me overly sensitive. I have to ctrl-z to move it back.

Of course it could be the way I hold my mouse, or my tongue, but no other product I use show this behaviour.

I used to have this problem with all modelling packages...

Now I use a track ball for modelling. (Logitec Marble Mouse)

If you want to be sure that it's the application rather than interactions with the mouse, try using the tab key to switch between objects and see if they still move...

If I select by tabbing, or by drawing an area which includes the object, they don't move (of course).

I suspect that the EAUI is too sensitive to a cursor movement immediately after selection, perhaps it should be clearer about the difference between click (RMB down) and drag,
and a simple click.

I definitely recommend the marble mouse approach.

:)

You can have one of those things running side by side with a regular mouse, although, over time, I've migrated to using the trackball full time and the mouse almost never.

Yes I can confirm. If I'm not careful my elements move a little bit as well when I'm only intending to select them.

I don't know if it helps, but I've just checked in 9.1.910

(I haven't upgraded my projects and users here for some time)

I can see the same behaviour if I use the mouse to select objects in diagrams in this version.

Most of the time I can select an object OK, but approximately one in five, there is a little wriggle. It's hard to see because of the way EA shows the object selection, but it is definitely there...

There is a related issue perhaps...

Highlight a connector and move the mouse until you grab one end...

(the mouse pointer changes)

...then try to move that end of the connector. Ooops! you're moving another adjacent element.

Seriously though, track-ball, track-ball...

I also have this problem of connector selection and movement, it is frustrating and so obviously a problem I can't believe Sparx haven't noticed it and fixed it, and I haven't reported it - I'd need to get a screen movie capture tool to demo it (any suggestions?).

Regarding the accidental element moves, you could try "Tools > Options > Diagram > Behavior > Objects Snap to Grid" and set the grid size to 2: that will prevent accidental single pixel moves from being interpreted as moves, but you will sacrifice a little bit of fine control.

Regarding connector end selection, try zooming in for greater control.

Interesting idea as a concept.

Unfortunately when I set the grid size to 2, EA changes it back to 5.

Changing it to a higher number works fine.

Is there another setting somewhere else which is coming in to play?

You're right - I tried it but hadn't noticed  :-[

Maybe that's the answer then: allow set grid size to 2. I have no idea if there was a specific reason that 5 was chosen as a minimum.

Just another suggestion - but I normally work with the "Smart Placement" option enabled under Diagram | Snap to Grid.  A side-effect of this option is that it seems to make it harder to accidentally nudge an element like you describe.  Even when you click and drag the element you have to move the cursor several pixels before the element snaps out of it's current position.

I'll keep an eye out for that feature, it doesn't appear to be in my current version.
