Bitmap images lost during XMI export / import

I have put an image (png , jpg) to a diagram using the image element from the common toolbar.

After exporting to XMI , Importing the XMI not an empty model, I observe that the frame appears, but the image is not part of the model.

Scanning the XMI export indicates that only the image ID is exported but not the data of the images.

Any ideas which settings are necessary to make the image part of the XMI export

There is some setting in the XMI portion of the options where you can tell EA to export images as well.
