Blue Screen of Death after latest OS update

   I am no longer able to display a process diagram.  I thought it was my hardware, so i used a virtualized VM machine, and sure enough, EA loads a process diagram, no problem.   It seems that i updated with the latest microsoft service patches, and that is when the Blue Screen of Death appears when i go to display a diagram.

I then upgraded the VM (note that this was working fine), and now the VM crashes with the same blue screen.

Unfortunately Microsoft released a couple of bad patches last week. Last I read the advice from Microsoft was to uninstall them.

I would like to confirm the same behavior.

When trying to navigate to (or generate report from) a BPMN diagram, the operating system crashes!

Is there a patch for this?
Is there a Bug ID for this?

I read a news article before I came in this morning that said Microsoft has released a new patch for the security update causing a problem. (The three optional updates haven't been fixed yet)

Sorry, I don't have the link on hand. But if you didn't install the optional updates a Windows update now may fix the problem. I'm waiting on results internally for someone testing the patch.

For what it's worth, I found that KB2993651 (update for kernel-mode drivers) released on 27 August appears to have caused my BSOD's in EA.
I have since uninstalled this security patch and am monitoring the situation. Feedback from EA regarding this patch and it's specific  influence on a Windows 7 workstation would be appreciated. (Take note, Windows 8 colleagues appear to be unaffected).

Absolutely correct this is indeed the offending update

Uninstalling it does indeed solve the problem, but then upon shutdown Windows re-installs it again!!!!

Shut down without applying updates only solves this re-install for a time, since eventually Windows will re-install it

Anyone have a suggestion for ending this cycle of uninstall / re-install?

I have a Windoze NT in a VM and I have turned off any automatic updates (ever since). I don't have any problems since I don't use any web-apps/browsers on this machine. It's just for EA (at least 90%). For any other work I use my Mac.

Hi philchudley,

You can set to 'ignore' some Windows Update item.

1. open Windows Update, then uninstall the 'bad' updates (need restart Windows)
2. open Windows Update again, Windows suggests updates which you removed at step 1
3. in this window, select option to choose items to install. Now you can see items to update in list
4. right-click items in the list, you can set an item to 'ignore'
5. Windows never install the items when shutting down

Sparx Systems has been investigating what we can do about this issue since it doesn't look like Microsoft will correct it any time soon.

First, only Windows 7 x64 machines are impacted. Second, you can prevent most occurrences of the problem by switching to the Basic renderer and disabling GDI+ metafiles. (Tools | Options | Diagram | Appearance)

We have found a workaround for most situations that are triggering the Microsoft error. We are currently testing an update to 11.1 that includes this. It will be pushed out when it's ready. But I wouldn't expect it to be released this week.

Having said that, we are aware that even with the updates we are testing a blue screen error may still occur. The problem is that we are unable to reliably reproduce it. To be honest at this stage I'm not sure we will be able to, and our recommendation would still be not to install the KB2993651 update to Windows 7 x64 machines.

For anyone following this thread. A new build 1111 has just been released. It bypasses the KB2993651 to prevent a BSOD in all known circumstances.

skiwi, perhaps this is sufficient motivation to upgrade to the latest build?
