Pasting rich text into notes
« on: March 20, 2013, 03:04:22 am »
I'm on V10. When pasting rich text into class notes I see two effects:
- The original size appears when pasting, but once re-opened the font has the default size
- Leading blanks seem to be stripped off
(FWIW: The paste buffer is filled from my Mac and travels through Parallels into the windoze environment, but that works fine for other applications.)

Anyone seeing the same result?

q.

[edit] The leading blank stripping seems to be an issue with EA/Parallesl paste buffer. When I paste into Wordpad first the leading blanks are preserved. Only when pasting directly into EA they get stripped. However, the size issue is still there.

For as long as we've had rich edit controls you could paste text with formatting that EA didn't support and see this behavior. It's a bug, but I think a relatively minor one.

I once worked for Siemens and whenever their QA found things like that you had to correct it. Probably QA in Germany and Australia have a different attitude. But I wished your QA would be a bit more Germanized...

This so called "bug" - more likely just neglectfulness on the part of a requirement specification, has been around for at least 4 major versions of EA.

See the image below for what happens (cute eh) when you paste from Word tables (and this has been reported by me as a bug)

Notes in EA are pretty poor.  They don't even support sub-lists, such as:
1. Item 1
2. Item 2
    a. Item 2a
    b. Item 2b
3. Item 3

If you paste it in from a document, it displays correctly, but loses it all when you click out and refresh.

This should be considered a bug - and not a "minor" one because using the Generate Documentation feature really suffers here.

Unfortunately this is a Catch 22. EA has it's internal storage format for notes and they don't dare to move away from it.

That doesn't make much sense - I don't see the Catch 22 here and I don't see why they don't either add more formatting features or just a regular RTF editor for the notes.  The other thing is that even if you link an RTF file to a component to get around the formatting limitations, the RTF doesn't get exported when you generate a document (at least no by the built-in tempates).

If someone sticks to a proprietary format for more than 10 years while there's HTML outside this definitely looks like a Catch 22 -  at least for Sparx, the provider of the format. You'll get caught too if you start thinking, they're going to change it :-X

It's like the herpes virus of IT systems :-)

Actually it's not that bad.  We have some case management systems here in NZ running on Notes that have extremely low cost of ownership.

What a coincidence. I just got my yearly herpes outbreak just this week.
