Searches - how to tailor the structure?
« on: July 14, 2015, 03:42:57 pm »
The Model Search functionality is one of the most useful areas of Sparx EA.  It only took me eight years of use to discover them...  :-[

However, there are a couple of areas that I'd like information on.

We'd like to seriously tailor the Search menus - so that ONLY the searches we define are there by default.

While the provided searches are interesting, they won't be as useful as the searches we will be defining and want to distribute to our users.

In other words using the current setup, our users likely to ONLY use the My Searches Menu item and select from the provided list (say some 20 to begin with).

We'd like to be able to categorise our searches better (say have half a dozen categories, each with only half a dozen searches each.

At present the number of clicks to get to some of the most often used searches is considerable.

Is there any way (behind the scenes if necessary) to achieve what we're after?

TIA,
Paolo

Either write an add-in where you manage your searches effectively or send a feature request. Honestly this drop down is as lousy as, well,  ask skiwi. My guess: it has been designed by the same person that did the options dialogue.

The only categories other than the built-in ones are based on technology. (Which you would need to distribute your searches to other users anyway)

For a way forward...
You could add a custom portals page containing your searches.
Or, you could fill a diagram with hyperlinks to searches, float it and dock it anywhere you like.

That would be useful...

Is there a predefined order to t he searches?  My Searches is at the bottom, would the MDG searches be after that?  If the MDG was active it would be good to have that at the top!...   ;)

Thanks for those ideas Simon,

I'll have a look and see if either or both are more useful than the standard search protocol.

Hi Simon.

I've had a quick look and I can see how to add searches to my MDG - but they just go to the end of the Searches list (as expected).

I see how to add a portal page for an Add-In, but it's not clear if I can add such a portal page where I've only got an MDG (and not a separate Add-In - say in C#).  Is that possible?  Where do I do that in the MDG generation process?

I also presume that the standard portals are fixed and can't be "tweaked".

TIA,
Paolo
