Add Element... dialog crashes EA
« on: July 23, 2015, 06:02:55 pm »
If you use the Add Element... context menu item on a packge in the browser, the New Element dialog is opened.

if you use the [Save] button instead of [Save & Exit] a short time after the element is placed on the diagram, EA crashes.  Is it just me or is it a more common problem?

If it's common, I'll report it.

TIA,
Paolo

About which "Save & Exit" are you talking? I can't follow your steps.

q.
Select a package in the browser,
Right click to show the context menu,
Select Add Element... (just above Package Control>)
the New Element dialog should appear with 4 buttons:
[Save] [Save and Exit] [Cancel] [Help]
Make sure [X] Add Element to Current diagram is marked
If you [Save} (rather than [Save and Exit]) if you move the mouse, EA will crash.

I only see three buttons: Save, Cancel and Help. Using 1208.

There's 4 on 1215.  If the change is this recent, that might explain the "unfinished code".  ;)

Can anyone confirm/deny this behaviour, please?

For me it does not crash. Probably you should check the usual suspects aka. add-ins.

Hi Paolo,

I can confirm the Button is existing :-) and your bug as well :-)

"Save" creates the element, added it to the diagram and the project browser and the dialog is still open.

After pushing the "Cancel"-Button, EA. breakes.

So you just need to get out what you both have in common that I don't have.

I found what appears to be a related bug report.

It appears to be a regression in Windows 8 due to accessibility settings. (ie. It impacts a subset of Windows 8 setups)

We're looking into a fix and possible workarounds.

Thanks Stefan,

I found, like you, that the [Cancel] button crashes, but all I really needed to do was wait and move the mouse around a bit.

Thanks Simon,
'
My setup is both Windows 7 and windows 8.1.  I think (from memory) that  it happens on both.  My main machine is currently a Windows 7 machine (on which the crash is present) so I'd need to specifically check on Windows 8.1.

Simon,

Do I need to formally report a bug or is this already "in train".

Paolo,

That depends on how likely you think that it's the same issue. As I said, we haven't reproduced it on Windows 7.

My personal opinion is that a fix for the issue we have found is likely to apply to your situation too.

My view is there's nothing to lose by reporting.  If it gets fixed by the other bug, then good.  I'll pop one in shortly.
