Java API, EA instance, image manager

Hi,
I've just started looking at the Java API for EA. A couple of questions:
1) Is it possible (and if so, how) to use the Java API to attach to a running instance of EA?
2) Is there a way of uploading images via the API so that one can automate the "Select Alternate Image" functionality.
