Time frame for support for Version Control?
« on: August 05, 2002, 06:20:50 am »
We are at the brink of deciding which tool to use for the development of a new project. So far we have been very impressed with EA, considering its low price. However, one important argument against using it, is its poor support for version control/configuration management. We need to store our project files in CVS due to company policy. I have noted, that the intention is to add support for version control to EA. But when? And what granularity will be supported (package level, object level, or...)?

Hi,

The major things we currently have planned for the rest of 2002 mainly centre on the enabling of connectivity to alternate DBMS's - eg. SQL Server, Oracle etc., implementation of user, group, password access, version control support and ability to define patterns, profiles &etc. from diagrams.

In addition there are a lot of tweaks and smaller enhancements waiting to be done. IDL and XSD support are also planned if time permits.

Implementation of a version control system is dependent on some database changes - which will happen with the enhanced connectivity. So we expect work on the version control system to start in a couple of months time.

The finer details are not yet decided. As the export of a package to XMI is already implemented .. the ability to store that in a version control system would not be too difficult. At a finer level, the ability to export an object's XMI - including extended attributes, connections and diagram instances would be required ... and the ability to restore from the same.

Hope this gives some sense of where this is at,

Geoff Sparks
