Links have wrong direction in Rose?
« on: April 13, 2004, 02:56:42 pm »
I'm using EA and export to rose, and I've noticed all my links (association, aggregation, etc.) have their directions reversed.

So a link source in EA becomes Link B in Rose, and link destination becomes link A in Rose?  And rose has directions going from A to B.

Is there a fix, or some quicky process I can use to fix this?

For a quick hack

Load the Architect file into MS Access (or open your server repository. Look for the t_connector table. Editing the direction field will definitely make a difference!
Supported values are Unspecified; Bi-Directional; Source->Destination; Destination->Source.
To ensure you get exactly what you want, edit a couple fo connectors by hand in EA, then look at the database again to see the effect.

Well that works...  Hopefully I'm not messing anything up...

I do notice the file sizes differ greatly after converting to new database version, make changes, and converting back to old database version.

hmm...

Hi,

it has been discussed elsewhere on this forum already (do a search, I am sure it is still floating around here). Many tools really display the relationships with arrows in a wrong direction (according to the UML standards).
Changing the underlying database would change the meaning of the model...

I couldn't find any forum entries that actually had a solution.

I think there is no solution as there is no actual problem - some tools choose to display relationships different way, i.e. the tools modify the standards or create their own standards. Reading a model in one tool and in another may not be exactly the same. Changing the actual direction of relationships is a nice workaround and you may choose to do that, but it does change the meaning of the model.

Gotcha... I played around with the rose model, comaparing imported links to links I created in rose, and the model itself is correct.  But the arrows run the opposite direction as the links created natively in rose.

So it's not that rose understands source and destination differently, it's just a quirk in the import.  A link imported vs. a natively created link will have different arrow directions, even though their source and destination are the same.

Perhaps if you dropped them a line, IBM might fix this quirk overnight and get  out a new release early next week. ;)

Maybe he is getting (to much) used to the release-interval of the Sparx team.
