Using EA 4.0 means you can't go back?
« on: August 02, 2004, 11:43:07 am »
Our work group had been using EA 3.60. One member of the group upgraded their EA client to v4.0. After he accessed our shared repository, none of the other users could access the repository with their 3.60 clients.  :o

Is this expected behavior? Our entire group has had to knife-edge roll to EA 4.0 to continue.

Also, more importantly, is there going to be a similar roll required between v4.0 and v4.1? None of us has moved to 4.1 yet, fearing the ripple effect that it might cause.

Hi Marcus,

It is expected behaviour. The user that used the repository of v3.60 for the first time with v4.0 got a very explicit conversion wizard to answer. That wizard asks if you want to convert the repository, then creates a backup and than converts the original to the new repository format. The user probably didn't notify anyone that he had followed that wizard.

With EA 4.0 you are not able to use a v3.60 repository directly and the conversion is therefore a must for v4.0 users.

The repository changes are mostly likely to happen with major version changes. At least warn your users not to use the conversion wizard (always started before conversions, there will be no silent ones).

Greetz,
Tjerk

Hello Marcus and Tjerk,

Here is additional information.

If you use DBMS repository, maybe Upgrade wizard doesn't make backup data.
So, you can't go back to old versions.

V4.0 and V4.1 use the same database version '4.00',
so if you open repository with V4.1, there is no upgrade process.
(You can check database version from 'About' dialog.)

Hi guys!
I had a problem with EA version but the problem was different: I installed the 4.1 version, and I gave up of using it because I couldn't install it in the other computer. So, when I tried to re-install the 3.6 version it was impossible...it is behaivoring as microsoft...  ;D

Peace!
