Missing 'Apply' menu option creating Profile
« on: October 20, 2004, 07:08:19 am »
Having followed the instructions in EA Help to Create a Profile, I then want to 'apply package as UML profile', but find that the context menu only has the 'save package as UML profile' option - right-clicking either on the View or the enclosed Package.

[Neither does the context menu say 'delete <<profile>> myprofile', just 'delete myprofile' - so it's not seeing it as a profile package]

What else needs to be done, or is this a new bug ?
[EA build 731]

We've fixed a few things since build 731: Prior to build 735, "Save as Profile" only worked when right-clicking on the diagram, not in the Project View. You also need to make sure the package containing the profile diagram has the <<profile>> stereotype.

If those two things don't help, then either download and install the latest version of EA (739) or if you can't do that, drop me an e-mail and I'll install 731 on my machine and try to figure it out. It'd help if you sent a screen shot of your profile package contents too.

Cheers

PS Just realised I didn't really answer your primary question: there is no longer an Apply command. You save the profile and then import it into the Resource View tree by right-clicking on "UML Profiles" branch.

What, so I rightclick on the package and then in Package Properties, type 'profile' into the Stereotype field ?

What I was trying to do was create a diagram annotation element which I could use to indicate that there was a File resource associated with the diagram (rather than have it buried in an element's tabs somewhere unobvious), and to use the stereotype mechanism to distinguish it from a vanilla element.

I looked at Note and Text - the ones that semantically seemed the best fit, but they don't have a File attribute unfortunately.

Having read through, I think that Component::Artifact is the thing I wanted all along, and I don't need to stereotype anything ... except perhaps to give Artifact a more informative alias !

Thanks for the other stuff about setting up a profile - if I get to ninja standard I'll have to write a first-principles tutorial, since the Help file is written for the user who already knows why, and just wants to know how ...

of course, since in the other case it would be called tutorial  ;)
Honestly, unlike Microsofts help files which never (!!) had any usefull information for me, EA's help really helped me very often  :)

<offtopic>Actually, prior to (I think) Word 97, the MS Office Help files actually were quite good in that they gave you examples and background, and not just 'what does this button do' or 'how to enable feature X'.

Hence you could read around the subject and actually find out how and why to use a certain functionality. </offtopic>

I agree with you about the EA Help, with the exception of the stuff like Profiles, but I note there is a White Paper on the subject in the Resources link on the website, so I shall read up.

... later ... no, the doc in the Resources only describes the data in a Profile, so there's still a need for better usage info on Profiles (and Tags, too).
