Generate sequence diagrams automatically
« on: October 29, 2004, 06:03:44 am »
Hello,

is it possible to generate sequence diagrams automatically depending on the reverse engineered code base or do I have to model those diagrams manually? The class diagram is generated automatically by loading existing code files... What about other diagrams, do they also have to be generated manually? I couldn´t find anything in the manual concerning this topic.

Thanks and regards,

Benni

Thank you for the answer, that was already very helpful for me. In this article is mentioned that it´s possible to generate activity diagrams automatically. How can I do that?
Please excuse my stupid questions, I´m an absolute newbie in this topic ...

Benni,
you *can* do this, but not with standard EA. Other tools are capable of creating activity diagrams automatically (I guess). If you wan't to do it in EA you need to do a little (lot?) programming using its automation interface.

The Borland's Together is capable to to reverse engineer the seuquence diagram from the code.

How about a feature request to EA to have an 'auto switch'
from sequence to collaboration and v.v. as Together does?

We are currently working on a couple of examples to auto generate the diagrams, but none that are tight enough to release as yet. In the short term they will be released as add-ins, but in the future they may become part of the EA standard release.

TomO,

any news on when any of these add-ins will be available for examination/beta testing/just trying out?

Many thanks,

Matt

Hey Matt,
As a matter of fact there is. :-) I have been playing around with the idea of setting up a section on the webpage so you guys can download the addins that we are writing and have a bit of a play. Hopefully by this afternoon (Australian Eastern Daylight savings time) (GMT +10) I will have a page up with a couple of addins: a Requirement Document Generator and the forward / reverse Sequence to Collaboration diagram generator. Currently there are some issues with Collaboration to Sequence that we know about - it’s just finding the time to iron them out. Nevertheless we will release the beta versions for feedback and bug finding. ;) How does that sound?

Update: Ok I will add it, it is going to be located in the registered users section on a trial basis. Stay tuned!

Sorry Guys,
It doesn't look like I will be able to get it done today; I am looking to early next week now. Sorry for the inconvenience  :-/

I apologise for being sceptic, but I doubt that a correct and usefull sequence diagram can be created by revers engineering, how would the machine recognise the relevan scenarios?
