EA User Group - www.eausergroup.org
« on: March 05, 2005, 11:20:19 am »
Hello,

we have put in place an "EA User Group" website. EA users can now easily post the Add-Ins they have developed or download Add-Ins developed by others. We are also working on creating a shared database repository that the Corporate Edition users could connect to over the web and collaborate with the others.
Read-only access isavailable to everyone, in order to post or participate in the discussions, you will need to sign in. Just send an e-mail to [email protected] with your name and e-mail address and you will receive your username and password shortly.

Please have a look at http://www.eausergroup.org

Any comments, questions or suggestions are most welcome!

Bruno

Hi Bruno,
great work :D Is there any way to thread discussions according to themes? If yes, the discussion board would be a good alternative to the current YABB. If not it's likely to become counterproductive :-[

Hi Thomas,

thanks! :-) Yes, there is a way - do you have an idea for the initial structure of the discussion board? It would be most welcome!

Thanks,
Bruno

G'day g'day,

Should I expect this new web site to focus strictly on complementing the forum by providing those features that the forum does not (and cannot?) provide?

Or is this new web site going to compete with the forum by providing same features?

I hope that this new web site focuses only on add-ins and shared db repositories, as per Bruno's first post.

If this new web site is meant to replace the forums, I'm okay with that,  BUT it had better be quick.  I really do not want to monitor two web sites for Q & A's.

Cheers and best regards.

I would rather keep the user group for user-supported addins and tools, since the forum does a good job in terms of EA help/discussions, and has the benefit of Sparx oversight.

This then makes each site a one-stop-shop, rather than, as CJ notes, having to check two different places.

Plus Sparx might drop the forum if it's seen as being duplicated, and we wouldn't want that ;-)

No, we would not want that :-)

I would imagine the EA User Group as a place where the users could easily share their own work with the others. Although eausergroup.org does provide the discussion forum functionality, I envision the discussion being related to posted free tools etc. I do not think it should replace the forum here, if for no other reason that the fact that the Sparx forum is the first place where the users look, the user base here is large and growing and the forum really functions as a knowledge base as well.

Hi Bruno,
that's fine! Just a second and I'll search the thread about the  forum reorganization from last year.

Edit: here we are http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=general;action=display;num=1077009102

All BBs, and online forums in general that I've seen, suffer from the problem of information getting 'lost'.

There's useful stuff in there, but the threadname doesn't make it visible, and sometimes the search can miss it too.

I've noticed that the same questions get asked here repeatedly (use cases, anyone ?!) not to discourage anyone, but just to note that it happens, even if you search well, before posting a question.

Will have to invent a new forum that automatically categorises and context-visualises postings as they are made, thus giving access to all the buried treasure !

Hi,

that's why we have created "Hints & Tips" and "FAQ" sections at eausergroup.org. We will try to organize the information there in a form that will allow it being found easily. Or so we hope :-)

My point was that splitting stuff like H&T out requires manual intervention.

Forums in general do not give much assistance in exposing content, other than linear threads and keyword searches.

Have you ever (Google) searched in vain for a workaround to some issue, to find that you are not the only person with the same problem - but no-one ever posted a solution (that you can find) !

It's really a knowledge management issue - which is beyond the scope of this discussion ...!
