Trial Version -- can't save diagrams
« on: April 08, 2005, 06:53:43 am »
Hi,

I've downloaded the latest version of EA for trial and find that I can't save diagrams (all that I've tried so far).  The "save" icon never activates and I'm allowed to close the program with unsaved work without any warning to do so.

Have I misunderstood the limitations on the trial version?  If it helps I running EA on a Toshiba Tecra 2100 laptop under Windows 2000 SP4 w/ 512MB RAM.

Thanks,

Steve Alred

Hi,

the need for the Save icon is in fact somewhat questionable, as any elements you create are saved automatically. If I well recall, the Save icon makes sense to use only to save the layout of the diagram, if you have changed it.
When you close the model and re-open it, did you loose any of your work?

Thanks,
Bruno

Thanks for the explanation, but, yes, it does appear that nothing was saved.  I created my own project file and can see and select it via the "Recent Model" or "Open a Model File" options.

When I do so the full path and file name appear in the window title, but there is no indication that I have done any diagramming work; i.e. the only tab at the bottom of the section is marked "Start Page".  The only active items under the "Diagram" menu are "New Diagram..." and "Configure Swimlanes..."  "Diagram Views" opens to a greyed-out list.

I'm stumped.  (But some folks will say there's no trick to that...)

Hi,

you should have a look at the "Project View" (likely on the right side of your screen, unless you have changed the layout). Browse through the packages and look for the diagram you have created. Or use the search function (Edit > Find, or Ctrl + F) to look for the diagram and/or elements you have created.
As there may be (and typically will be) many diagrams in a model, EA does not automatically pick one to display it upon loading the EAP file. You can however set one diagram as a default and that one will be displayed automatically, should you wish so.

Try to search for your elements, chances are you will find them hidden somewhere.

Hope this helps!

Bruno,

Thanks -- you are exactly right: the Project Browser led me right to the diagrams.  Thank you also for being so diplomatic in your response -- I think mine would have been much more succinct: RTFM!

I am not sure if TFM actually explains this in detail :-) You are welcome Steve!
