XMI Support

I am interested in understanding the following:
I have an XMI file generated from Rational tools which refers in it's DOCTYPE statement to a Rational UML 1.3 DTD.
I try to import it (naively so without setting the "Rational" specific XMI setting in options) and get an error because, like so many others, I do not have this DTD.
So I comment-out the DOCTYPE statement and look - successful import of model and diagrams (diagrams are a little messy but appear intact)
Can anyone at Sparxsystems enlighten me as to what UML XMI DTD was used to achieve this? And what in your view constitutes a "standard" UML DTD?
