Floating licence?
« on: October 06, 2005, 06:42:12 pm »

We consider buying floating license. I have a question. How does automatic check in/out work? Does the user need to perform any specific action when starting EA? E.g. do request for license key somehow and so on?

If we are going for floating license, do we need to store the models we create on the license server?  can we store the models on our local machine

To use a floating licence, each machine needs to be configured to be told where to obtain a shared licence from (ie. the location of the key store).  See following page under "Add a Shared Key" for an example:
http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/EAUserGuide/index.html?addlicensekey.htm

Once specified, whenever EA is opened, it will automatically try to obtain a licence from the key store.  If it successfully obtains a key, EA will run.  When EA is shut down, the key should be automatically returned to the key store.

Using a floating licence system does not limit you on where you can store models.  You can store them on the network or on your local machine or using a DBMS repository just as you can with a stand-alone licence, it makes no difference.

One more question
-We are going to buy the floating licence for the corporate edition.  Now, I'm aware that we can configure a db to store the data models with corporate edition.  However, our model is pretty small and we don't want to configure database yet.

Is it possible to buy a floating licence and install the license store in the server machine use the corporate edition without setting up any database?

Thanks

There's no need to set up a DBMS repository if you don't want to, this is just an option available in the Corporate edition which is useful when dealing with large projects or a large number of users.

You can easily just use an EAP file, just as you can with every other version of EA.

Is it possible to check out a license to a laptop and use it when not connected to the network with the license server?

I have used this approach with some laptops. There is an option which disables automatic releasing of licenses when you quit the application. Then the laptop will have the license checked out for the length of the expiry duration the system administrator has set. Once the laptop is back and is connected again to the server, you can activate automated release of keys. Works pretty good.

Also, as an alternative to disabling the automatic release setting:  Open EA on the laptop while connected to the network (thereby checking out a licence), then disconnect from the network while EA is still running.  This licence should remain valid on the disconnected system for the duration specified by the key store, and will remain checked out from the key store for the same period.

Either of these ways will work.  :)

How is the user id  tied to the floating licence?  Should we use the network id as the user id?
