Forum Timestamps - changed?
« on: October 29, 2005, 10:19:20 pm »
Assuming that last week, the forum time displayed at the top tight of this screen was correct, is it still correct or is it now an hour slow?

If if is an hour slow, does your local have daylight saving?

I'm asking these questions because mine went slow and the reasons why (if mine wasn't the only one) have an important lesson for the correct management of the effluxion of time (what a beautiful phrase) in systems.

Expectantly,
Paolo

You really care for the timestamp?

Yes.

An old woman died in Melbourne Australia because the Emergency System could not handle a full stop (dot, period) properly.

One could conceive of a security system governing elevators in a tall tower coming to a grinding halt at peak hour because their time synchronization was governed off a server on the other side of the world during Daylight saving change over.

Stranger things have happened.

Paolo

But again, did your time change? Did anybody's?

The YaBB forum only supports your timestamp by setting the difference between the forum time, and your local time.  This can be done in your profile.  Interestingly, I had to change mine from 17 to 19.  I'm assuming the server time must have went the other way at the same time.

Yes,
but does the Forum hold time as Local time or UTC (GMT)?

I'd have expected your time to move by one hour since you're in Victoria - where you have Daylight Saving.  But my time to remain the same since we in Western Australia don't.

If I moved 1 hour back, you should have moved 2 hours... At least it seems to be consistent...  ;D

Unfortunately I think it's consistently wrong...

I believe the server hosting the sparxsystems domain including this forum is located somewhere in the US.  That's based on the time difference that I need to set.  I'm guessing that wherever it is must have just moved out of daylight savings.

Yes,  that was the reasoning I was using.  So the problem is that the YaBB is storing its local date time instead of UTC.

A common design defect. ::)

;D By the time I had finished changeing all the non-unix clocks in my flat yesterday I had no idea which day it was let alone what time.   So, I jumped in the car to go shopping, forgot to change the car clock and when I got out of the supermarket mucked around and missed out on a date by a good hour.   >:(
9 linux pc's all changed time automagically.  1 WinXp changed automagically.  Linux appointment calendar times not changed.  Outlook 2000 changed the appointment times??????????

Aside from Internet timestamp we in Germany (and a bit outside) have access to an atomic clock that transmits time data over VLF. Many clocks work with that and you never have to change time manually. My house is equipped with a bus system that has a VLF adapter.  My wrist-watch is Japanese - so I had to correct it manually :P

correct management of the effluxion of time
Or alternatively, your correct local 4-space coordinates (ignoring the other 7 coordinates as being far tooo small ;-)
