Customer Element Icons
« on: November 09, 2005, 04:13:11 pm »
I'm looking to model the current layout of a multi-server network application.  I'd like to create a diagram showing the physical implementation and how it maps to the software components, on down to the actual code.

This company has some similar (though not complete) diagrams already in place using various images such as computers, servers, etc.  When drawing this up, I'd prefer to use similar types of images to help improve the readability of the diagram.  The images could be alternate icons for existing elements, or new elements.

Is there a way for me to do this with EA?

Thanks,
Drew

You can use either stereotyped images (Settings/UML/Stereotypes) where you need EMF style drawings. Or you use alternate images for elements (Element/Appearance/Select Alternate Image).

However, the use of those alternate images is not recommended. Using them will make some guys in your company happy, but none of those that are able to read UML. If you're going to make use of them, limit it to a minimum.

Drew,

Yes there is, and there is a library of images at http://sparxsystems.com.au/resources/

The method is somewhere in the help file,  because I have [glb]strong personal objections [/glb] to using alternate images I have no idea where it is in the help.

Be warned! UML is designed to be readable, now and in 2 months time.  Pretty pictures, IMSO, aren't.  In 2 months not even the diagrammer will remember what he meant by the "blue" PC image vs the "yellow" PC image.
