Diagram Gate versus Message Endpoint
« on: December 19, 2005, 04:52:05 pm »
What is the different uses of these?  Typically I use a diagram gate to show an input into an interaction diagram from some common endpoint(s) in other diagrams.   I use the Diagram Gate on both the exit and entry points.   Why is this different then using a Message Endpoint?

I think you're using Diagram Gates correctly. A Diagram Gate is kind of like an off-page connector. If your current diagram is represented as a ref fragment on another diagram, the gate represents the point at which a message attaches itself on the ref border.

A Message Endpoint is used for modelling lost and found messages. These are messages where you either don't know or don't care or don't want to show the source or target lifeline.

Is it possible to link the diagram gate off to another object?

Maybe clicking (or ctrl-clicking) could jump off to another diagram / object.

Someone on my team has asked to be able to show the 'calling' of another use case from within a sequence diagram with such a thing - this sounds like quite a good idea.

You could try dragging the other diagram onto the sequence diagram and select "Hyperlink". Drag the hyperlink close to the gate and give it some meaning text description. Might help.

Was kinda looking for something a little 'tighter' than that - something that could be used in a dependency check...
