How do I configure a diagram to look forf like in an auto layout type way? E.g.

in stead of

*
**
*   *
*      *

For generalization links you can set Generalization link style Default = Tree on Tools | Options | Objects.  You'll still need to set the existing links to tree style.

you've no need to change the style of the DIAGRAM !
just change the type of each LINK you want to be in tree style

Method :
select the Link and right-Clic > Tree Style
