Derek;

It may be too soon for you to be using UML.  I'd suggest you continue working on writing a textual document that defines your domain, the underlying theory of how it operates and the policy decisions you and your management are making to remove alternative ways of approaching the domain.  Writing such a document will get you thinking deeply (and abstractly) about your domain issues and what you want to do about them in the framework.  You might find advantage if you think of the framework as being the implementation of integrated and unified domain policys, and not just a collection of useful objects and methods.

Actually, I'm working off of a 31-page document describing the problem domain, strategy for what the software does and doesn't do, as well as refined documents that limit the scope of the software for the first phase, and address what subsequent phases will provide.

I then have engineering design documentation discussing various strategies to implementing the various components in the overall design.  This is where UML as a representation comes in advantageously.  What I'm talking about is a methodology to approaching UML design and apply it to a new project that is ready to be designed.

Looking over the features of EA, it would seem to me that one could hold a high level requirements meeting with a blank EA document in Product Requirements mode to encapsulate what a new feature would do, and an engineering design effort could use various other UML documents to expand upon the use cases.  What I am after is to understand the industry-proven approaches to designing software in this manner.

I guess this is the most challenging software I've ever personally had to design and write, so the learning curve(s) are keeping me up at night.  Does UML 2.0 come with a sleeping pill widget? :-)

I wanted to add an example for non-UML communication here. All I can say to the graphics used here: Indians!
