cannot add/use initial state on activity diagram

I am trying to add an initial state to an activity diagram.

First problem - there is no initial state in the toolbox for activity diagram (even though it is shown in the manual, page = "Activity Diagram").

OK, so I know there is an initial state on the State Diagram, so I switch toolbox to State Diagram and add an Initial state. Unfortunately I can't link this Initial state to any Activity on my Activity Diagram.

I can add an Activity Final using the quick link from an activity, but can't see how to add an Activity Initial.

Any help appreciated, I'm sure I'm missing something very simple.

At the top of the toolbox is a combo box that lets you select the modeller profile.  Selections in this field control what icons are present and in which tool groups they appear.  
Some profiles do not have the "Initial State" icon in the Activities group.

You can either, select another profile or tailor the toolbox to include the elements where you want them.  See http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/EAUserGuide/configureperspectives.htm for more help.

great, I selected UML2.0 perspective and now I can see the Initial state.

I was beginning to think this was yet another case of the EA "unique interface" being so rich that users had no way of knowing where to 'start.'
