Displaying notes
« on: May 03, 2006, 09:16:04 am »
Hi,

I am new to EA and I have following problem:

Some of elements in my diagrams have notes, some of them not. It is tedious for my to always click on element and check, If there are some notes or not.

Is there a way, how can I change the shape of elements, that have note? (so I can easily distinguish them in diagram)

Or is there a way, how can I force EA to show the note (whole note, not just a part and three dots) when I run over the element with cursor? And event more, if there is e.g. state element with some attributes, when I run with the cursor over the attribute, would it be possible to see the note of that attribute, not the note of state element?

Thanks for any suggestions and comments.

Best regards, ONO

Hi ONO,

sounds like this might be what you are looking for:

1. Right-click an element on your diagram and go to menu Add > Attach Note
2. Right-click the connector between the newly created note and the element and in the menu select "Link this note to an element feature"
3. In the dialog that opens, select "Element Note"

Hope this helps!
Bruno

I usually get the first line of notes when I allow the cursor to hover over an element for a few moments. This acts much like tool tips in MS Windows applications. The element name is shown first, and then the notes. If the element name is very long you might not see the notes, since this appears to be a single line display.

I don't remember there being any Options setting to enable this, I think it is the default behavior.

Hi Bruno,

first of all, thanks for prompt answer.

I know about this option, but if I use it, my diagrams would become full of notes and therefore unclear and messed. I don't want to see always the whole note (I mean whole text of the note), but I want to always see that there is some note.

I thought, that if there were some kind of sign in the corner of element depicting existence of note, the diagram would stay clear and If I would like to see that note, I could do so by clicking on that element. (something similar as it is with composite state sign in the lover left corner of the elements).

Any comments? Thanks

No nothing like that Ono. I think this may have been mentioned before in this forum. Such a sign is definitely not UML. You could probably design something using a ShapeScript, but you would probably want to seriously think it through. In that case you also should wait until the documentation catches up with the feature.

If you are trying to see what elements have been annotated  try this.

Open the diagram.
Prese ctl-alt-R

There's also an icon on the default toolbar for this.

Are you aware of the Notes dockable window (View->Notes)?
