Representing files in EA
« on: May 10, 2006, 05:16:16 am »
In EA 5.0 I have found very nice feature - possibility to model elements named "Artifact" to represent some file on disk (artifact, for example some xls document). By using Ctrl+E shortcut, EA (5.0) opens that file in system default editor. Some times it is important to represent diferent kind of atifacts/files in EA (to integrate them with rest of the analysis model, make relations etc.), and have posibility to fast open them in system default editor/viewer.
BUT THAT DOESN'T WORK IN EA 6.1 :(((( This is a tragedy! :o When I press Ctrl+E - some stupid internal editor opens and show bushes! (And Ctrl+E is for "Open source in external editor" - is this external????!!!) Sparx Systems - what have you done?! Is there any method to show element's associated file in system editor???!
Best Regards, Robert.

Hi Robert,

I think you are in trouble here. The hotkey is now labelled to indicate it is for opening generated source code in the appropriate editor.

For document artifacts - and linked documents in general - EA provides an editor, which is probably the one you are stumbling over. Deep in the help file - under Editing Linked Document Templates you will find, between two graphics, the following phrase: "The Document Template Editor is built into EA."

Sigh...

Hi Robert,

Open up the options dialog (Tools | Options) and go to the code editors page.  After the list of languages you'll find a checkbox 'Use inbuilt editor if no external editor set'.  If you uncheck that you should get the behaviour you had in version 5.0.

And then disregard my thoughts on this. Sorry if I ran you around in a circle.

Thanks simonm, that helped. Now it works exactly as I need.  I was worried about this, because I really need that feature.

Best regards, Robert.
