How to confirm the DB-connection type

Hi, recently I meet a question: I always think that in our project we use the UI to connect the DB, but actually we don't konw what's the connection type, API or UI.

So, is there any way to clearly distinguish the connection type? Or is to say, how to confirm the DB-connection type?
