How do I get a document (Word) into EA repository
« on: August 22, 2006, 10:35:09 pm »
I need to get (import) an external requirement document in MS Word format into EA repository. It should be simple but can't figure it out.

I can create a document or an artifact and provide it a local file but it keeps it as a local file link and not store it into EA repository (MS Sql). I need it to store it into the repository so when I create the .EAP file for the project, it can be used to recreate the project complete with these Word files some other time.

Thanks for your help. Its rather urgent for us to do this so pls help.

Regards, kamal.

Search Linked document in help or here.

Someone may contradict me, but I don't believe that this is possible.   As far as I am aware the options are:

1) link to external files which I think you've found  - this allows you to use any document format but doesn't put the document in the repository

2) use the "Linked document" document option for an element, this opens the EA RTF editor. There once you've created the document you can "import" external files  (but the catch is that they have to be RTF format)  or use copy/paste-paste special.

Using option 2 you may be able to achieve what you are trying to do  by saving the Word document in RTF format before the import

The second is what I was thinking about. The MS Word format (.doc) I cannot put in repository in a STANDARD way, but it is still a database - you may do it straight in db - time consuming, but well controlled approach.

Thanks for a prompt reply. I was able to get the document into EA via linked document work around, however, how do I "attach" a specific document to a specific package. I don't see any indication that there are some linked documents in the repository. I am sure I am missing something..

Click on the package to give it focus, then right-click to bring up the context menu, then choose "linked document..."

So,  is here no way to "know" that there are linked documents associated with a package? Can I link more than one document to a package?

No I don't think you can have more than one linked document.  However if you there is something linked when you go to the context menu another option appears "Delete linked document" which confirms a link exists.

Deletion behaviour is a bit odd though.   If you delete the linked document when you have it open, then if you try to attach another linked document you can't because you just get the original linked document back.  You have to have closed the first linked document and have deleted it to be able to create another linked document from scratch.

To add multiple links I think you could use the "Document Artifact" route as described in the help

Thanks again for a very prompt response.

I am not seeing any "delete linked document" option anywhere (right click on the package doesn't show it). I created a linked document to a package. I also created a linked document via artifact. Now, the RTF generated gets both the documents, the one linked and the one via artifact. I need to delete the linked document.

Thanks, kkm

Not sure what the issue is there.  I get the delete option on the context menu,  but not on the top level element menu  - are you on 6.1 build 792 ?

I am on build 6.1.791

Do you know of a way in this build to delete a linked document form a package?
